What To Do In Lanzarote On A Rainy Day

When visiting Lanzarote for a holiday everyone dreams of glorious sunshine for every day of their stay.

Unfortunately sometimes that’s not always the case! Shock horror, a rainy day in Lanzarote does sometimes occur! For beach lovers and sun worshippers, this can put a bit of a damper on things, quite literally!

But don’t panic, there are still plenty of amazing activities to enjoy on a rainy day in Lanzarote!

  • Explore The Islands Caves

Head towards the north of the island and you’ll find stunning lava tunnels unlike any cave you may have seen before:  La Cueva de los Verdes (a personal favourite of mine) and Los Jameos del Agua.  The volcanic tunnels extend for a whopping 6km above sea level and a further 1.5km below the sea too (Curiously named the Tunnel Atlantida…)!

As a tourist you can enter La Cueva de los Verdes with a fully guided tour (narrated in multiple languages), which takes 1 hour.

Or enter the nearby Jameos del Agua and enjoy a coffee inside a cave, check out the rare albino crabs in an underground lake or learn more about Lanzarote’s volcanic history in the discovery centre.

  • Get Cultural

If you have a car handy, why not take a cultural road trip? Lanzarote offers plenty of indoor cultural centres and experiences for you to learn a little more about our wonderful islands history!

A visit to the Fundacion Cesar Manrique offers a unique insight into artist and architect Cesar Manrique’s vision for the transformation of Lanzarote into the Island it is today.

If you’re an art lover the Castillo San Jose, museum of modern art in Arrecife boasts works from international artists and a wonderful modern canarian restaurant with views of the harbour.

  • Spa Day

Treat yourself and your loved ones to a spa day at one of the islands many fabulous spas! Many hotels will allow you to pay to access their spa even if you aren’t staying there (just make sure to check in advance if you’re travelling with kids as most have restricted visiting hour for children). It’s not all massages and facials, most spa’s also offer a hydro-circuit with steam rooms, saunas and different pools to ease your aches and pains!

  • Go Diving

It doesn’t matter if it’s raining if you’re underwater! Lanzarote boasts a fantastic breadth of marine life for divers to enjoy as well as the unique sculptural Museo Atlantico by artist Jason de Caires Taylor. The island boasts many excellent dive centres offering daily dives for qualified divers or try dives for those wanting to experience the underwater world for the very first time!

  • Shop Till You Drop!

Whilst you may not find Lanzarote’s shopping centres as large as the shopping centres back home, when it’s raining, why not help yourself to a little retail therapy?

The islands main indoor shopping centre The Deiland can be found in Playa Honda. Smaller shopping centres can be found in at Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca or The Biosfera Centre in Puerto Del Carmen.
